ROUTE OVERVIEW

The Full Northern Red Sea in One Safari.

The North & Tiran is the broadest Red Sea liveaboard route from Hurghada — covering every major zone of the northern Egyptian Red Sea in one week. Coral pinnacles and dolphin lagoons near Hurghada, the world-famous national park of Ras Mohamed, four of the Red Sea's most dramatic drift-dive reefs in the Tiran Strait, two legendary wrecks (Thistlegorm and SS Dunraven), and the ship graveyard of Sha'ab Abu Nuhas.

The Tiran Strait reefs — Jackson, Thomas, Woodhouse and Gordon — are named after British cartographers and lie between Tiran Island and the Sinai Peninsula. Strong, nutrient-rich currents funnel through the strait and support some of the most pristine and biodiverse reef systems in the Red Sea: gorgonian walls, vertical drop-offs, hammerhead sharks in the blue, and wrecks right on the reef itself. These are drift dives — you ride the current, your boat picks you up.

Combined with Ras Mohamed National Park (global top-10 dive site), SS Thistlegorm, the SS Dunraven (1876) and Sha'ab Abu Nuhas wrecks, and the night-dive favourites of Mahmoudat and El Fanous East, this route genuinely has everything the northern Red Sea offers.

Diver Requirements

Open Water Diver with 20+ logged dives minimum. The Tiran Strait reefs involve strong, unpredictable currents and are best suited to divers with drift diving experience. Check dives on Day 2 allow the guide to assess all divers. Advanced Open Water recommended for Thistlegorm and SS Dunraven dives.

El Fanous East

North of Giftun Island · Hurghada area · Day 2 Dive 1 + Day 6 Night + Day 7
El Fanous means "lighthouse" in Arabic, named for the small buoy on the eastern side. Sandy bottom from 7m slopes gently to 25m, dotted with coral blocks, table corals and three large ergs with spectacular pinnacles. Home to rare macro life — crocodilefish, stargazers, frogfish and the very rare walkman fish in the sand. The northern wall is rich with anthias and bannerfish riding the current. By night, blue-spotted rays, octopus and sleeping parrotfish are abundant. Dived on this route on Day 2 as a check dive, returned for a night dive on Day 6 and a final relaxed dive on Day 7.

Sha'ab Abu Nuhas — Wreck Alley

Shadwan Island, Strait of Gubal · Day 2 Dive 2 + Day 5 Dive 1 + Day 6 Night
Sha'ab Abu Nuhas ("Father of Reef") is the Red Sea's most famous wreck reef — four historic shipwrecks on a single shallow reef in the Strait of Gubal. The Giannis D (1983, 4–27m) is the most accessible and photogenic; the Carnatic (1869, 15–27m) is the oldest and most elegant; the Chrisoula K (1981, 5–25m) still has Italian floor tiles in the hold; the Kimon M (1978, 18–28m) is the least visited. Night dives on the outer sandy approaches reveal octopus, lionfish and decorator crabs in quantity.

Sha'ab Mahmoudat

3 miles west of Ras Mohamed · Day 2 Dive 3 + Day 4 Night
A large reef system 3 miles west of Ras Mohamed with a series of coral pinnacles stretching east–west for 1.5 miles — and the site of the SS Dunraven Wreck (dived on Day 5). Known for its diverse range of marine life: large groupers, blue-spotted stingrays, squid, nudibranchs and leopard sharks resting on the sand. Exceptional as a night dive — cephalopods, Spanish dancers and ghost pipefish emerge in the deeper sandy sections. Often used as an overnight anchorage before Ras Mohamed dives.

Shark Reef & Yolanda Reef — Ras Mohamed

Ras Mohamed National Park · Day 3 Dives 1 & 2 + Day 4 Dive 3 · No night dives
Globally rated top-10 dive site. Two massive coral pinnacles rising from 700m depths — drift from Shark Reef to Yolanda along a vertical wall with permanent grey reef sharks, barracuda schools and Napoleon wrasse. The Yolanda wreck (cargo ship, 1980) rests at 15–18m with its load of British bathroom fixtures (toilets, bathtubs, ceramic basins) still visible — one of the most surreal sight-gags in diving. Shark Reef's north wall has big-eye trevally in tornado formations year-round. Dived twice on this route for different conditions.

Jackson Reef — Tiran Strait

Northernmost Tiran reef · Day 3, Dive 2 · drift dive
The most famous reef in the Tiran Strait — a drift and wall-dive site where the Gulf of Aqaba empties into the Red Sea. Stunning coral garden on the sheltered south side (5–25m), with anthias, parrotfish and moray eels. The exposed north side is a blue-water hammerhead dive in summer. The Lara wreck (Cypriot cargo ship, 1981) rests on the surface of the reef, visible before you enter the water. Variable, sometimes strong currents — drift with the reef on one side, the blue on the other. Visibility regularly exceeds 30m.

Gordon Reef — Tiran Strait

Southernmost Tiran reef · Day 3, Dive 3 · all levels
The most accessible and diver-friendly of the four Tiran reefs. A shallow plateau at 2–10m, surrounded by drop-offs to the south (25–50m). The Loullia wreck (Panamanian cargo, 1981) sits stranded on the north end, half above and half below water. Gentle circling currents on the south side make this ideal for all levels. Marine life is rich: snappers, butterflyfish, eagle rays, moray eels, and in deeper zones occasional dolphins and turtles. Often used as the last Tiran dive of the day when conditions are stronger at Jackson or Thomas.

Thomas Reef — Tiran Strait

Smallest Tiran reef · Day 4, Dive 1 · drift dive
The smallest but most spectacular of the Tiran reefs. Vertical walls covered in soft corals in shades of purple, yellow and red — gorgonians and whip corals swaying in the current. No fixed moorings; always a drift dive. The Thomas Canyon begins at 35m and descends to 90m+, crossed by three natural arches (the Three Thomas Arches) — a technical diver destination but visible from recreational depths above. Resting whitetip and leopard sharks at 25m. Less visited than Jackson, with a more pristine feel.

Anemone City

Southwest corner of Panorama Reef · Day 4, Dive 2
A shallow corner of Panorama Reef's south plateau packed with giant anemones from 5–20m, each hosting several clownfish families. Often called the most photogenic shallow dive on the north route — unhurried, colourful and teeming with life. Great for Nitrox long bottom times and underwater photography after the drift-heavy Tiran dives. Napoleon wrasse cruise the edge; schools of anthias pack the water column above the anemone garden.

SS Dunraven — Sha'ab Mahmoud

Beacon Rock, Sha'ab Mahmoud · Day 5, Dive 1 · Victorian steamship 1876
A British steamship bound for Bombay that struck Beacon Rock and caught fire on 25 April 1876 — no lives lost. Now lies upside down in two sections: bow at 15m, stern at 29m. Because she burned and sank empty, the hull forms a large cave-like space you can penetrate from the stern opening at 28m, passing the boiler and rigging. Soft corals, black corals and sponges cover every surface; glassfish in the thousands fill the interior; groupers, scorpionfish and crocodilefish patrol the outside. Less visited than Thistlegorm — nearly always uncrowded.

SS Thistlegorm

Sha'ab Ali, Strait of Gubal · Day 5, Dives 2 & 3
The world's most famous wreck dive. A 126m British WWII merchant ship sunk by German bombers at 01:30 on 6 October 1941. Holds contain Norton and BSA motorcycles, Bedford trucks, Lee-Enfield rifles, Wellington boots and two steam locomotives blown off the deck by the explosion. On a liveaboard you dive it before day-trip boats arrive — long surface intervals on Nitrox, multiple dives exploring different sections of the wreck.

Siyul Kebira Lagoon

Siyul Kebira Island, Strait of Gubal · Day 6, Dive 2
The sheltered lagoon on the western side of Siyul Kebira Island — a calm, shallow dive ideal after the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas wrecks. Hard coral gardens in excellent condition, big sandy alleys with bommies, and a rich variety of reef fish. Blue-spotted rays and garden eels in the sandy sections; schools of snappers, fusiliers and surgeonfish in the mid-water. Protected from current — a relaxed multi-level dive with good Nitrox bottom time.

Near Hurghada · Day 6, Dive 3
A resident pod of spinner dolphins uses this lagoon as a socialising and resting area — encounters most mornings before day-trip boats arrive.
